. . . . Never stop learning - Fostering lifelong learning, career enrichment, and professional advancement of nurses is fundamental to advancing the quality of healthcare delivery for patients, communities, and healthcare teams.
At the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, our Nursing Continuing Professional Development Unit and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programs are designed to support nurses in expanding their knowledge, advancing their skills, and enhancing their practice in today’s ever evolving healthcare landscape.
The University of Miami – School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) is an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation and by the Florida Board of Nursing. We develop and present CNE activities offered thorough SONHS and we collaborate with other units within UM, UHealth, and with SONHS clinical partners in the development and presentation of CNE activities and through joint providership of educational activities with other organizations.
We offer a variety of CNE educational activities, including workshops, courses, lecture series, conferences, and online courses. In addition, we collaborate across the campus and community in joint providership of CNE education activities. We also offer full event-hosting services as a destination venue for your professional education events. For those interested in simulation-based instruction, we also provide a range of custom designed simulation education courses and consultation services. Check out the links for further details and information.
Joint Providership
The University of Miami – School of Nursing and Health Studies (SONHS) is an accredited provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation and we collaborate across the campus and community in joint providership of CNE and/or interprofessional education activities. ANCC standards for joint providership, enables us to partner with other units, within or external to UM, for the provision of continuing education and professional development activities. This may include instances where the joint provider unit maintains accreditation for continuing education with another organization, and in instances where the joint provider unit does not have accreditation for continuing education. In either case, the same ANCC standards apply for us to engage with others in the development, planning, provision, and evaluation of jointly provided continuing nursing education activities and for the award of CNE contact hour credit. However, ANCC standards do not allow us to provide or award CNE contact hour credit for activities when we are not engaged in development of the activity, nor for retroactive award of CNE credit for activities that have already been conducted.
The University of Miami does not presently hold Joint Accreditation™ for interprofessional continuing education. However, the provisions noted above enable us to engage with other units in the provision of CNE and interprofessional continuing education activities, though our respective individual accreditation through ANCC, ACPE, and ACCME.
If you or your unit have an educational or professional development activity for which you would like to engage with us for the provision of CNE and award of contact hour credit, please reach out to us, well in advance of the development of your activity, and we can explore the options available. Following a brief discussion about your proposed activity we will provide a customized outline of ANCC/FBON educational design process requirements, applicable fees, and description of development steps.
