Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The National Council for Behavioral Health introduced Mental Health First Aid USA and more than 1 million individuals have been trained.

Course Objectives

Students who enroll in local Mental Health First Aid courses learn a 5-step action plan to help loved ones, colleagues, neighbors and others cope with mental health or substance use problems.

  • Similar to traditional First Aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid is help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis until professional treatment is obtained or the crisis resolves.
  • Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based public education and prevention tool –it improves the public’s knowledge of mental health and substance use problems and connects people with care for their mental health or substance use problems.

Course Completion

Upon completion, students better understand the impact mental illnesses and addictions have on a person, their family and communities. 

Student must attend all sessions of the course, pass the Mental Health First Aid Quiz, and complete a program evaluation to be considered certified in Mental Health First Aid USA training, and receive a trainer Certification.

$20 per student includes book.  This course is currently available to School of Nursing and Health Studies BSN students only.
